C6 Project: Blue Space

At InceptionU, we are very proud of our learners and what they can accomplish in just six short months. It’s an intense deep dive into the world of coding, software development, critical thinking, teamwork and problem-solving.

Over the course of the program, they deepen their knowledge of programming and spend the last three months building a software program which they present on Demo Day. In this series, we introduce you to our learners and invite you to see for yourself their creativity, design skills, teamwork and problem-solving skills. These projects represent months of hard work and, ultimately, helped many of our learners connect and find jobs with some of Calgary’s leading tech companies. Enjoy and share this post with a friend or colleague who you think might find it interesting.

Why:

Calgary’s downtown Plus 15 system is a convenient network of indoor walkways and bridges, but can be difficult to navigate due to poor signage and poor quality maps. Team Blue Space wanted to design an app that could help people find their way around the Plus 15 system, allowing them to search and locate businesses in a timely and efficient manner.

What they built:

Team Blue Space built a 3-dimensional mapping system of the Plus 15 walkways. Users had the ability to view the maps from above or zoom in to street level. With the user always top of mind, they designed and implemented various features including the ability to drop and save a pin at certain locations, a feature that calculates distances and travel times and the addition of various entrances, exits and nearby bus stops.

Facilitator’s Comments - Al Del Degan

“The Team Blue Space project was very impressive. Many of us at Demo Day were asking when this would be available because we'd absolutely use it! They got the technology to work, and then were able to spend more time asking the questions, “What should it look like and how should it interact with people?” I could see this being used by the City of Calgary and being adapted to university campuses.”
