Demystifying the admission process

You took that step and applied to InceptionU - congratulations! Unlike other programs, we don’t simply use your resume or academic transcript to decide on your acceptance. There is a comprehensive process in place to help us decide if you’re a great fit for the program.

As you read this, you’re not sure if you should feel relieved or terrified.

First of all, R-E-L-A-X. We know interviews can be stressful, so we’ve designed the intake process to be fun, unconventional and insightful.

We want to help you put your best foot forward when presenting yourself to our intake team. This is a chance for us to get to know you and for you to get to know us.

We asked Reagan Markwell, our Intake Lead, to explain the process.

Intake Interview - Group Interview

This group activity actually simulates the type of learning you’ll be doing at InceptionU, so it’s a great way to kick things off.

There is a facilitator and an HR professional in each group Zoom session, along with other applicants to the program.

We work through several different engaging activities where you will be asked to answer thought-provoking questions and share your perspectives. We aim to make this fun and not stressful.

In total, this takes about 90 minutes and the goal is to assess your mindset.

There is no pre-work or studying required.

Intake Interview - One-on-one Interview

During the group interview session, you will join the HR Professional in a private break-out room for a 15-minute one-on-one interview. You will be asked to share previous successes and areas that you’ve identified as opportunities for growth in your personal or professional life. You may also be asked to share about your previous job experiences, education, and any certifications, degrees or diplomas you’ve earned. Most importantly, you’ll be asked about your future goals for your career, what you hope to gain from the program, and why you think a career in software development or a tech-adjacent role is right for you.

The one-on-one sessions are a way for us to gauge suitability for our unique programs, and whether this is the right time and program fit for the individual.

If you are applying to the Tech Adjacent program, this is the end of the admissions process. You will hear back from a member of our team.

If you are applying to the Full Stack Developer program, you will continue through the steps below.

Tech Assessment

Following a successful intake interview (group and one-on-one interviews) you will then be invited to take a Tech Assessment. You will be given resources to prepare and asked to schedule a time to complete the assessment with our Tech Assessment facilitators. There is a Trial Tech Assessment to help you practice and prepare. Our Tech Assessment intends to determine your comfort level with coding languages and gauge your technical proficiencies.

Financial Considerations

There are two ways to pay the Full Stack Developer program fee.

  1. Self-fund - Some participants choose to self-fund, access our bursary fund or apply for a loan through our partners ATB or Windmill Micro-lending. We will connect you with the right resources.

  2. Apply for a government-funded seat - the Government of Alberta supports those facing unemployment or underemployment by funding their seat in the program. To qualify, you must complete an Employability Assessment to determine your eligibility.

Acting on behalf of the Government to complete your application, we will ask you a series of questions regarding your educational and employment history, current employment status,  financial status, and more.

We then send this information to the Government which determines whether you can receive a funded seat.
