InceptionU receives grant to help make Calgarians future-fit

Funding for Cohort 7 Evolve Full Stack Developer program announced

We are excited to welcome a new cohort of learners to our Full Stack Developer and Designer programs this fall.

The Full Stack Developer program will start September 27th with in-person classes and the ability to pivot to a virtual program as needed. The Full Stack Designer program will begin November 15th.

Funding for limited seats for the Full Stack Developer (FSD) program has been made available through the provincial government’s Alberta Integrated Training Program. This means that some of our learners in the FSD will have their tuition funded by the government while the remaining seats in the program will be available for self funded learners. This is a huge opportunity for Albertans to acquire the high-demand skills that Alberta companies and organizations need right now.

At this time, our Full Stack Designer program is limited to 15 self-funded participants only.

“The Alberta government recognizes our program delivers results. We’re honoured to be a part of the AB Integrated Training program funding and it means more Albertans will have access to this training. Many of our learners are taking a break in their career to come and learn with us, so to be able to have their tuition funded is a financial strain they don’t need to worry about,” says Margo Purcell, co-founder and CEO of InceptionU.

Who can qualify for funding?

Some of the requirements that must be met: you must be 18 years of age out of high school for over a year, unemployed or underemployed (less than 20 hours a week over the last 12 week)

For many, it is an opportunity to pivot their career into the exciting tech industry. Our program attracts a wide variety of people from very diverse backgrounds and we are sure this Cohort will be no exception.

Our focus on project-based learning and essential skill development are two key areas that make our program unique. Project based learning allows for our learners to collaborate, iterate, use feedback to improve their work, create software that addresses real world challenges, and share their work publicly with the innovation sector in AB. The projects pull the learning and create a launching pad for participants to take their learning to a whole new level as the work is meaningful, not linear and mechanical. Learning as you work on projects (Project #2 and Project #3) is extremely valuable and helps to emulate the agile and fast-paced environment that exists in the tech industry.

Controlled Unleashing

“It’s not learning to drive from a book and then jumping in the car and learning to drive. We start by handing them the steering wheel,” says Tony Enerson, the lead technical facilitator at InceptionU.

Essential skills training (critical thinking, visual thinking, collaboration, communication and networking) are often a surprising and welcome addition to the curriculum at InceptionU. Many of our learners say they didn’t expect to dig so deep into figuring out who they are, their values, ethics, opinions and how they work with others. As our CEO Margo Purcell often says, “If they are soft skills, why are they so hard to learn?”

Here is what we are hearing from some of our previous learners:

“InceptionU opened a door to the future for me.” - Art Treleaven

“I acquired technical skills, but the Evolve program was more about personal growth. I learned to put myself out there more and ask for help. I learned it’s ok to be a lion and not a sheep.” - Navin Jetha

“InceptionU Evolve program was a ray of sunshine during dark Covid times.” - Marc Ranger
