What are you reading, Cheryl Best?

Are you looking for some great summer reads, both for business and pleasure? We asked Cheryl Best, InceptionU’s Operations Thought Partner, for some of her all-time favorite books. Cheryl doesn’t have a lot of spare time, so she savours every moment she can curl up with a good book.

IU: What are you currently reading?

  • CB: Play Bigger - Here’s an excerpt: “Winning today isn’t about beating the competition at the old game. It’s about inventing a whole new game-defining a new market category, developing it, and dominating it over time. You can’t build a legendary company without building a legendary category. If you think that having the best product is all it takes to win, you’re going to lose.”

IU: What is your favorite self-help book?

The Art of Thinking Clearly - I loved this book because it showed all the biases that we often never realize we are participating in. The short chapters include real-life examples that highlight how the bias occurs in the real world.

IU: What was your favorite book as a kid?

  • Not Without My Daughter - The harrowing true story of a mother’s courage. I have read this book at least 4 times in my life, in addition to the sequel "For the love of a child.” The journey that the author and her daughter experienced is one to be told for a lifetime. And sadly, it is just one of a thousand other real life that are out there. I literally couldn’t put the book down as I became so committed to see the mother / daughter survive. I suggest watching the movie only after reading the book.

IU: What are your three all-time favorite books?

CB: Anne of Green Gables series, The City of Joy, Anna Karenina

Anne of Green Gables and Anna Karenina are classics that should be read by everyone, especially Anne of Green Gables - who doesn’t love Anne?! The City of Joy is a book that I can hardly explain except that it will help you to appreciate any living thing around you.

IU: Do your read more than one book at a time?

CB: Yes, I do... in fact, my nightstand has about 12 books on it. I need to get more organized and finish one book before starting another.

IU: What’s a book you’ve read more than once?

CB:  the Anne of Green Gables Series, Not Without My Daughter, Princess by Jean Sasson

IU: How do you make time for reading?

CB: Vacation! I stack up books for my days off and then read them the whole time I am away.
